How I overcame my fear to go skiing again after surgery

Time to go strong in 2021

NEW BEGINNINGS

I see the beginning of a new year as a door opener, an invitation to shed some old skin and make room for changes I want to make in my life.  So, what am I willing to let go of in order to feel lighter inside, whether it’s letting go of physical weight, a limiting belief holding me back, or a situation I feel stuck inside emotionally?

Now that we’re into March, where do you feel you’re losing traction on the changes you set your mind to make for this year?

There can be a long list of things to let go of. Which ones make more sense to focus on?

SHIFT YOUR PERSPECTIVE, CHANGE YOUR OUTCOME

Adjust how you approach the issue you want to change and watch how life delivers new possibilities. I call this shifting your inner reality by 1 degree and voila, you have new experiences coming your way.

Something that I have come back to over these past few years of healing from cancer is Tapping or otherwise known as Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT).  It’s a simple process that can deliver stunning results to your quality of life.  I’ve been surprised many times at how quickly I can shift my experience from feeling nervous and uneasy to calm and relaxed.

BEGIN HOW YOU FEEL, TAPPING TAKES CARE OF THE REST

One thing I appreciate about the approach of Tapping is that it begins with the premise of where you are at in the present moment. Whatever the negative situation is that’s causing tension, pain or distress in you, is where you begin.  There’s no pretending that everything is OK or not so bad.   When you feel like garbage wrapped up in worry and fear, this is the time to tap and to tap on exactly what the garbage is.

Since my double hip replacements in the summer of 2020, I’ve had to exert extra control over my desire to jump back into skiing.  However, it’s now 5 months later and the snow has been falling. Skiing continues to be a passion of mine and I’m so eager to get back onto the snow after not being able to ski because of the increased pain and lack of mobility in my hips.

HOW I OVERCAME MY FEAR OF GETTING BACK ON MY SKIS

With so much snow falling this winter, desire and passion overtook my restrictions on exercise and I decided to give skiing a try.  I pick up my cross country skating skis and drive to a favorite area. Lost in feelings of nervousness and doubt about whether I’m doing the right thing or not, I suddenly am aware of the loud ambulance sirens coming up from behind me.  I pull off to the roadside, take a deep breath and say to myself, “it’s OK, you’re going to be fine, this ambulance is not for you.”

I drive another kilometer up the road and pull off beside the ski tracks and notice the ambulance has stopped about 500 meters ahead next to a pull off for the skiers.  I wonder to myself if this is a sign that it’s not a good idea for me to try skiing today?  I acknowledged my slight apprehension and doubt, yet I felt compelled to see how my body would feel on the skis.

I had been envisioning myself finally skiing again this season and having a strong and capable body with stable hips to support me.  In these split seconds of awareness, I knew I wanted to move forward and give it a try even with the ambulance reminding me that danger can be imminent.

TAPPING RELAXES THE BODY AND CALMS THE NERVOUS SYSTEM

Using Tapping a lot through many difficult situations during my cancer treatments, I automatically went into Tapping mode before getting out of the car.  Acknowledging the doubt, nervousness, and now questioning my judgment, I began to allow my body to relax and release the fear as I worked my way through the tapping points.

I moved from an emotional place of questioning myself and feeling unsure about getting on the skinny skis without falling, to feeling confident, capable, and optimistically cautious about how I could proceed with my little expedition.

I share this story with you because there are going to be these moments that come up where you question or doubt yourself or feel a lack of something in you that you desire.

MANIFEST WHAT YOU DESIRE

JanBlog3.21.jpeg

In order to manifest the person you desire to be, you’re going to have to become aware and acknowledge the uncomfortable feelings of where you feel held back or stuck. Next, be willing to let go and move forward. For you, it might not have to do with sports.

Maybe it’s around parenting and you can’t get rid of the feeling that you judge yourself for not being a good enough parent, a health challenge where you feel that you will never get better, or a relationship you find toxic.   You feel doomed to live with these self-judgments and pain for the rest of your life.

FROM DISHARMONY TO HARMONY

Whatever your situation is, Tapping can help you relieve and even diminish completely the levels of stress, tension, and frustration you’re feeling.  When you acknowledge the areas of your life that are creating disharmony between your thoughts-what you’re thinking- and your heart-what you’re feeling, the next step is to move into self-acceptance.

It’s alright to feel this way.

Do you dare to accept and love yourself even with all these emotions and pains you’re feeling?

This can be a tough step to really take when you’re not feeling great about yourself. However, take a chance, be lighthearted and choose to love and accept yourself just as you are.

Now you begin to shed that old skin and tap your way into the vision you see yourself becoming.

What are you shedding this year? Drop a comment in the box below and share how you’re transforming this year.

Make this the best year to the start of a new decade!
